Shooting Down B-12 Shots for Weight Loss

One of the latest weight loss trends involves B-12 injections. Go ahead. Punch it into Google and you get about 461,000 results.

On first glance you might think this vitamin shot is the silver bullet for fast weight loss. Sadly, like most “LOSE WEIGHT FAST” trends, it badly misfires.

Yes, I know some of our favorite celebrities, including Madonna, Justin Timberlake and Charlize Theron, have been linked to this trend. They’d best stick with music and movies and leave healthy weight loss advice to the experts who know it’s all about burning more calories than you eat – and following a sustainable diet and fitness program while you do so.

According to, there’s no solid evidence that vitamin B-12 injections aid weight loss.

Dr. Brent A. Bauer notes that vitamin B-12 is a water-soluble B complex vitamin found naturally in a variety of foods, including meat, fish and dairy products.

“Some weight-loss clinics offer vitamin B-12 injections as part of their weight-loss programs,” Bauer says. “Proponents of vitamin B-12 injections say the shots give you more energy and boost your metabolism, helping you shed unwanted pounds. But unless you have a vitamin B-12 deficiency, vitamin B-12 injections aren’t likely to give you an energy boost.

“If you’re hoping to lose weight, resist the lure of quick and easy solutions. What counts is a healthy lifestyle. Enjoy healthier foods in appropriate quantities and include physical activity in your daily routine.”

The authors of Shape magazine concur.

“Log onto Groupon, walk into a medical spa, juice bar, weight-loss clinic, or even a beauty store and you may notice something: Everyone is making claims about B12: Boost your metabolism! Increase your energy! Lose weight!” notes a recent feature on

The “science” insists supplementing with B-12 will increase energy and rev up your fat-burning metabolism.

“That’s not the case, though,” says Ashley Barrient, R.D., of the Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery and Bariatric Care. “When taken in excess, your body eliminates what it doesn’t need.”

Here’s what you need to keep in mind: if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. There is no secret when it comes to shedding weight.

You need to eat better, fit in a little exercise and develop a lifestyle you can stick with for the long haul.
